djvu or DJView

Today, i was downloading an e-book from my friend site, usually in that site using pdf extension file as their ebook exetensionwith compressed to zip file or rar file. But today i found new extensions it called “djvu”. At first time i’m confused what is djfu file mean …?? How i opened it ..? So i try to find in google site what is djvu mean.

I just want to share with you all what is djvu (pronounced “déjà vu”) and other called DJView.

What is “djvu” 

DjVu (pronounced “déjà vu”) is a new image compression technology developed since 1996 at AT&T Labs to solve precisely that problem. DjVu allows the distribution on the Internet of very high resolution images of scanned documents, digital documents, and photographs. DjVu allows content developers to scan high-resolution color pages of books, magazines, catalogs, manuals, newspapers,historical or ancient documents, and make them available on the Web. At first it means you scan your book or page with your scanner and save as djvu exetensions. But why not using pdf as an usual ?

Advantages of DJVu

DjVu typically achieves compression ratios about 5 to 10 times better than existing methods such as JPEG and GIF for color documents, and 3 to 8 times than TIFF for black and white documents.  (taken from their official site)

It can compress page with 300DPI fullcolor from 25 MB to 30-100KB. Black-and-White pages at 300 DPI can be compressed until 3KB to 30KB.

It can be helping for file to displayed at realm of an average HTML page format which is tipically around 50 KB.

For color document images that contain both text and pictures, DjVu files are typically 5 to 10 times smaller than JPEG at similar quality. For black-and-white pages, DjVu files are typically 10 to 20 times smaller than JPEG and five times smaller than GIF. DjVu files are also about 3 to 8 times smaller than black and white PDF files produced from scanned documents (scanned documents in color are impractical in PDF). Cool isn’t it ..??

The DjVu format isexcellent. The visual quality of the page progressively improves as more bits arrive. For example, the text of a typical magazine page would appear in just three seconds over a 56Kbps modem connection. In another second or two, the first versions of the pictures and backgrounds will appear. Then, after a few more seconds, the final full-quality version of the page is completed.

My experience, i’ve downloaded some file with djvu extension around 2 MB , after i convert to PDF it become 25 MB with same quality.

How to Open DJVu

There is a lot of way to open file with DJVu format. You can use stand alone software or you can open it via browser with djvu plugin installed first.
