Letter: I Me Mine for the soul
October 22, 2009When we get too caught up in the “I, me, mine” of this world, that is the time to perform a spiritual ju jitsu on that self absorption, and turn it into a selfless motivation of living toward a higher plane. If your gut tells you that there is more to live for than just the here and now and things we can touch and see, study Jesus’ words. I bet a lot of things fall into place for you.
Recently while watching the miniseries on national parks, they showed many group photos from the 1800s and the thought occurred to me that every single person in those photos is dead right now. That is the real reality. We will all die one day. There is no getting around it, barring some miracle scientific breakthrough.
Religions and spiritual beliefs in this area range the entire spectrum. My spiritual foundation is based in the teachings of Christ, which include the concept of love, karma (reap what you sow), good works, personal responsibility and treating others as you would have them treat you. Christ tells us to “keep our bags packed, and by the door,” this is not the real world. Be not conformed to the world. You cannot serve God and Mammon. “What you have done to one of these, the least of my brethren, you have done to me.”
I operate on the base assumption that everything is perfect in the Lord. Each person will deal directly with the consequences of their actions, words, motivations and intentions. This world is a temporary illusion, a school for the soul, so to speak. Store up your riches in heaven. Everything we do here “sends up the lumber” to build the house which we will live in.
