Fake Publisher’s Clearing House warning
October 29, 2009Warning about Fake Publisher’s Clearing House

Local residents from Stewart have reported receiving anonymous phone calls from scammers who are convincing residents that they have won prize money. A female identifying herself as Deborah Holland of Publisher’s Clearing House called stating that the resident had won 10 million dollars and that it would be delivered on Tuesday, October 20 at 10am.
The residents would be personally escorted to the bank to receive their prize money because the amount was too large to be home delivered. She finished her conversation by stating they would need to pay $6,000 for the state taxes in advance. The money would need to be sent via phone transfer.
The resident wanted to discuss this further with a family member and soon heard some chatter in the background but could not make of what was said, the caller disconnected and was never heard from again. When checking the caller ID, it read “unknown caller.” Another case reported was almost the same incident, except this time it was a male caller stating that the prize was a new car and $138,000. It would be delivered at noon on the same day but fees would also need to be paid in advance.
The caller ID read once again, “unknown caller.” Dover Police Chief, Kim Wallace received this complaint about the phone scam on October 20.
Wallace said. “I seem to get these kinds of complaints from time to time, and the callers are hard to track, but this is the third complaint in the past month.
I always try to warn people to never give out any personal information and it seems to be that these scammers target senior citizens. We want to try to warn people to be very careful with these unknown phone calls.”
