RRA Attorney Law Firm demise to have trickle-down impact
November 3, 2009RRA Attorney Law Firm demise to have trickle-down impact
The situation involving Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler and its leader, Scott Rothstein, has the potential for rippling impact in the South Florida charitable, political and business communities. The Dan Marino Foundation, named after the Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback, has two upcoming events involving RRA, which is going into receivership, and Bova Group, in which Rothstein is an investor.
Suzanne Friedel, development coordinator for the foundation, said the group was “moving forward with our events, but otherwise I don’t have any comment.”
CEO Mary Partin was on vacation, she said.
The foundation Web site has an announcement that features Dan Marino, cigar maker Carlos Fuente Jr. and the Bova Group, inviting the public to the 9th Annual Cigar Dinner on Nov. 10 at 450 East Las Olas, the site of the former Jackson’s Steakhouse. Bova Group had announced plans to reopen it as Bova Smoke, a cigar bar and lounge.
Pictures from the 2008 smoke event included several of Rothstein with Marino, and another with car dealer Ted Morse.
In February, the foundation is planning the Rothstein Rosenfeld Adler/Dan Marino Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie. The club is owned by Nova Southeastern University and the campus is home to the Miami Dolphins’ practice facility.
Rothstein’s biography said he received his law degree from NSU in 1988 and was an undergraduate at the University of Florida.
A 2008 IRS filing by the Rothstein Family Foundation indicated it had paid or approved $445,000 in contributions and gifts – $200,000 for the Dan Marino Foundation, $225,000 to Alozno Mourning Charities’ Overtown Youth Center and $20,000 for the Handy Inc. scholarship and education program in Fort Lauderdale.
The Mourning foundation is named after the former all-star Miami Heat center.
Rothstein has been an investor in Bova Prime Group, which has a restaurant on the ground floor of the Bank of America Building, at 401 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, where RRA is headquartered.
The restaurant was open for business on Monday and still expected to host the radio show of the Dolphins’ Ronnie Brown this evening, a receptionist said. The general manager would not have any further comment, she said.
Anthony Bova’s Boca Raton phone number is unpublished. Rothstein bought into the business operated by Bova and his wife, Laurie, in July 2008, the Business Journal reported.
Rothstein subsequently bought a stake that reportedly gave him operational control of Casa Casuarina, the former Gianni Versace mansion in South Beach, with plans to bring the Bova concept there.
A receptionist at Casa Casuarina said managers were in a meeting and not immediately available for comment.
Kip Hunter Marketing, which is on the 22nd floor of the Bank of America Building, six floors above RRA’s headquarters, lists Bova Prime as a client.
Reached at her office on Monday, Hunter said she did not have any comment. Hunter’s client list also includes the Dan Marino Foundation.
Rothstein has been a major contributor to the Republican Party.
Among the contributions by Rothstein listed on www.newsmeat.com, which bills itself as “America’s most popular campaign donor search engine,” are:
- Charlie Crist for Senate general election, $2,400 on June 30
- Charlie Crist for Senate, primary, $2,400 on June 30
- Republican Party of Florida, $10,000 on Jan. 26
- McCain-Palin Victory 2008, $37,500 on Oct. 14, 2008
- McCain-Palin Victory 2008, $70,000 on May 7, 2008

The Ronnie Brown injury is an absolute killer. Ricky Williams may simply be too old to have to carry the load on his own. Chad better become an NFL quarterback in a big hurry. The defense is decent, but not good enough to carry them all year long. They definitly have their work cut out for them.
