November 4, 2009Boxing Hall of Famer Lou Filippo dead at 83
On Monday, California boxing judge and referee for over 30 years, Lou Filippo, died at the age of 83 in Los Angeles. Lou Filippo was once a professional boxer who fought as a lightweight from 1947 to 1957 in Southern California. During his decade-long career, his professional record was 23-9-3 with 8 KOs. Filippo was also inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame for his efforts in the sport.
He began to referee and judge the sport he loved in the mid-1970s.
The WBC held a moment of silence this week in Filippo’s honor during its convention in Jeju, South Korea.
According to ESPN, Filippo’s most renowned refereeing assignment was in 1987, when he sat on the panel for the “controversial Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvelous Marvin Hagler middleweight championship fight in Las Vegas.”
To date, there are ongoing arguments as to who won the fight, however, Leonard was awarded a split-decision win. ESPN reports that Filippo scored the fight in Hagler’s favor at 115-113.
Filippo’s presence in the boxing world led to several television and film appearances, including parts as a referee in several of the ‘Rocky’ movies.
