Americans celebrate Veterans Day
November 11, 2009New York celebrates Veterans Day with Parade
The NY Daily News reports that thousands of veterans will march down Fifth Avenue this afternoon, “the largest contingent in memory, and hundreds of thousands of their fellow citizens are expected to turn out in honor.”
“The Veterans Administration reports that there are about 24 million living veterans, some 7.5 percent of whom are women. There are about 37 million spouses and dependent children of living veterans and survivors of deceased veterans. Together, according to the V.A., these folks represent about 20 percent of the population,” writes The Salt Lake City Tribune.
In light of the tragedy at Fort Hood, Texas, Rasmussen Reports finds that 81% of American adults view the U.S. Military favorably this year. Yesterday in the Fort Hood Memorial service President Obama said, “”Their life’s work is our security, and the freedom that we too often take for granted. Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town; every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – that is their legacy.”
