FAA Flight Delays: Computer Glitch Causing Delays – A nationwide FAA computer system malfunction is causing flight delays at some Airports Thursday. The program actually designed to automatically enter flight plans stopped working properly around 5:15 Thursday morning, forcing flight controllers to enter the information manually and leading to system-wide delays.
The flight plan includes the destinations, routes, weight and baggage information regarding the planes that take off and land from airports in the nation. The air traffic control systems have not been affected. (more…)

FAA Flight Delays: Glitch Causing Delays Fixed
Air travelers nationwide scrambled to revise their plans Thursday after an FAA computer glitch caused widespread cancellations and delays for the second time in 15 months. The Federal Aviation Administration said the problem, which lasted about five hours, was fixed around 10 a.m., but it was unclear how long flights would be affected.
Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said controllers were still entering flight plans manually in some locations even after the glitch was fixed.
Aviation officials told The Associated Press that the problem began at the computer center in Salt Lake City. The officials asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly. (more…)

Subaru, Volvo, Ford and Wolkswagen wins Insurance Institute Highway Safety Competition 2010 – Nineteen cars and eight SUVs have earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award for 2010. And — for the first time — good performance in a roof strength test to measure protection in a rollover is required to win. Subaru is the only manufacturer with a winner in all four vehicle classes in which it competes. The automaker earned five awards for 2010. Ford and subsidiary Volvo have six winners, and Volkswagen/Audi had five.
The IIHS Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rear, and now rollover crashes based on good ratings in institute tests. Winners also must have electronic stability control, which research shows significantly reduces crash risk. This is the second time the Institute has tightened criteria since announcing the first recipients in 2005. (more…)
