Leonid Meteor Shower Set to Light Up at 16th November
In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, 2009’s edition of the Leonid meteor shower will reach peak viewing time for sky-watchers in North America. Star gazers who lift their eyes to the heavens between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. will likely be rewarded with a good show of “shooting stars.” A second, briefer, but very intense outburst is expected about 12 hours later — during the early-morning hours of November 18th in Asia [Sky & Telescope]. But that probably won’t last long enough for North Americans to see it when night returns here.
Like other meteor showers, such as the Perseids and the Orionids, the Leonids happen when Earth plows through a trail of debris left in the wake of a comet orbiting the sun [National Geographic News]. This comet, called Tempel-Tuttle, swings through the inner solar system about every 33 years, and last did so in 1998. (more…)
Volvo launched a contest tie-in with the second Twilight movie New Moon, “What drives Edward?”
Twilight fans who participate in the contest can win premiere tickets and a new Volvo. A lot of fans are having trouble with “What drives Edward, phase 4,” and a question on Yahoo Answers points to a video that seemingly helps. (Die hard fans: Stephenie Meyer is appearing on Oprah today to promote New Moon.)

November 11 is a Veterans day, but it is also a special day for Central Piedmont Community College applicants in the Charlotte, NC and nearby areas. Today is the first day of registration of the current students of CPCC for the upcoming Spring 2010 semester. Students can go to cpcc.edu and find various ways of registering for for the spring courses.
Yesterday was the registration time for all those CPCC students who have completed 24 to 49 credits. Today, starting 7:30 AM EST all other currently enrolled students can go to Piedmont Community College or register for courses at CPCC.edu.
Tomorrow, November 12 is the date for open registration. (more…)
